Back to Birmingham

I will be heading back to Birmingham, Alabama next week for a quick job.  I will hopefully get my fill of ribs, like these amazing specimens from Saws BBQ

Womb Chair Returns

The womb Chair was returned today with it's new skin.  The guys at Rose Upholstery did a great job.  New foam, new cushions and some unseen structural stuff.

New Cushions

Vahid from Rose Upholstery dropped off the new cushions today.  They turned out great. I think I might have tweaked the sizes a bit but we are very happy with work done.

Banco In Situ

Banco searching for squirrels across the street.

Buckwheat and Bay Leaves

We planted the Conejo Buckwheat in the front yard and the California Bay Leaf on the back slope this morning. Some of the grasses in the front were scorched over the summer and we are hoping the buckwheat to be a hardier breed.

Anna's Sputnik

Another print from Anna Filimonova.  Inspired by a picture that hung on her grandmother's wardrobe. Sputnik flying over Red Square and Spasskaya Tower. The awe it inspired in a young girl.

California Bay Leaf

On our excursion to Theodore Payne yesterday, we bought a new tree for the back slope.  We planted a ghost pine down there last spring and we thought about adding another one.  But WL spotted (and smelled) this beauty. The leaves are incredibly fragrant, the wood is used for guitars, the nuts are roasted and eaten.  The leaves are used to cure headaches and toothaches. We made tea from a single leaf this morning and it was delicious. This tree has something for everyone!

More Anna

I received a package today from Russia containing a few more of Anna Filimonova's excellent prints.  Her work so far has been largely monochromatic. The new prints are bursting with color and are much more complicated pieces.  Each color needs a separate linocut plate. Off the the framers.......

Upholstery Projects 2 and 3

The fabric for the added cushions arrived today so I motored into Hollywood to drop off the fabric with Vahid at Rose Furniture and Upholstery.
He showed me the gutted womb chair.  The foam is being replaced 25 years after he first upholstered this classic in 1990. The chair itself is vintage to 1972.

Upholstery Project 3

The big sofa pillows are going to be reupholstered in the same pattern but different color than the new cushions. This color is called Beeswax. We are hoping that having the same pattern outweighs any jarring color differences.
I must give credit to my father and mother for creating such a colorful and patterned filled home to grow up in.  If I hadn't lived in one, I doubt I'd be as adventurous now.

Upholstery Project 1

The daybed has been barren for awhile now.  Today we received its new cushions from  Rose Upholstery.  The fabric is from C F Stinson in their Elderberry pattern. They look great and Rose made new side bolsters, as well.  Next up is upholstery project 2..... the Womb Chair.  It's to be covered in a  Pollack fabric called Batik Java. The chair's normal place in the sun room is to be vacant for several weeks.

Rose Bowl Shoot

We were shooting at the Rose Bowl yesterday and I got to work with some of my favorite people.  Including GreenBean Key Grip Ryan and cameraman Andre L.
