Popcorn Cassia

  • We finally got rid of the last trumpet tree this morning and planted an East African native.... the popcorn Cassia. The leaves smell like buttered popcorn. So nice. Big yellow bunches of flowers from equally big black clusters. In less than 3 hours, the butterflies had found it and were enjoying it. Read more here

    Richard Zanuck RIP

  • One of the youngest men ever to head a studio passed away this week. Richard Zanuck was 27 when his father tapped him to run Twentieth Century Fox studios in the mid 1960's. It is his tenure here that is immortalized in John Gregory Dunne's amazing book, The Studio. He would go on to produce the first summer event blockbuster with a young Steven Speilberg. The film was "Jaws". Amongst the hits and the flops, he always reigned as the last of the Hollywood mogul princes.
  • Obama Gets Wet

  • Love these picks of Obama in the rain speaking to 900 supporters in Glen Allen VA. He apologized to women for the state of their hairdos but it seems the girls did not mind.
  • Critical Thinking

The GOP has begun an attack on critical thinking. With this as a result, no wonder they're getting whackier by the day.......

    It's Alive

  • We went downtown yesterday to catch a screening of Danny Boyle's theatrical production of Frankenstein. British National Theater started a great series of viewing their productions worldwide. The actors in this production alternate roles nightly and we caught Jonny Lee Miller as the Monster and our favorite Sherlock Benedict Cumberpatch as Victor. In Los Angeles, there are two more opportunities to catch this production at the Downtown Independent theater. You can find encore screenings in your neck of the woods here
